D4 Endgame Runes Explained: Farming, Rerolling, and Mythic Crafting U4N

Runes are easy to underestimate when you are focused on improving your character.

Runes are easy to underestimate when you are focused on improving your character. Many players naturally spend most of their time checking D4 items, replacing equipment, and adjusting stats. However, once your character reaches the deeper stages of endgame progression, runes can become one of the biggest factors determining how quickly you complete your build.

Managing D4 items and runes at the same time requires a little organization. A good drop is useful, but the right rune can have much more long-term value because six copies of certain Legendary Runes are required for specific Mythic Unique crafts. U4N can provide another place to research item-related progression, but your in-game farming decisions should always start with the character and Mythic target you are currently building.

Why Rune Farming Changes in the Endgame

Early in progression, almost any useful drop feels valuable. Endgame farming is different because your needs become more specific.

Instead of simply asking whether a rune is good, you should ask whether it contributes toward your next major upgrade. If your goal is Harlequin Crest, for example, EOM becomes much more important. If you are targeting Tyrael's Might, LITH deserves priority.

This mindset helps prevent a common problem: having plenty of random runes but still being unable to craft the item you actually want.

Kurast Undercity Should Be Your Main Route

For focused rune farming, Kurast Undercity is difficult to overlook. Using a Tribute of Harmony gives the final boss guaranteed multiple rune drops, and higher Torment tiers can improve the overall reward quality.

The dungeon is most efficient when you keep moving. Activate beacons, prioritize elite packs, and aim for Attunement Tier 4 rather than stopping for every ordinary monster.

The goal is not to make every run a complete clear. The goal is to maximize the amount of useful reward you receive for the time spent inside.

Where to Find More Tributes

Your Undercity routine is only sustainable if you maintain your Tribute supply. When that supply starts getting low, switch activities rather than wasting time waiting for another drop.

The Pit and Tree of Whispers are useful sources for maintaining your endgame farming loop. High-tier Whisper Caches can provide valuable resources, and Glittering Prim Goblins may also drop multiple Tributes.

This creates a natural rotation: farm other activities when necessary, collect Tributes, then return to Kurast Undercity for targeted rune farming.

Tree of Whispers Remains Useful

Tree of Whispers is particularly attractive because it combines rune farming with other rewards. Each Whisper Cache provides at least one random rune, as well as gold and additional endgame materials.

The best approach is to prioritize activities that generate Grim Favors quickly. World Bosses, Legion Events, Seething Abominations, and fast dungeons can help you complete the requirements without turning the process into a slow grind.

For players who dislike repeating the same dungeon for long periods, this can make rune farming feel much less repetitive.

Use Helltides for Mixed Rewards

Helltides are another practical option, especially when your character needs other resources at the same time. Concentrate on elite packs and Tortured Gifts, since chest encounters can create additional combat opportunities.

The main benefit is flexibility. You are not entering Helltides exclusively for runes, so every other useful reward makes the session worthwhile.

Make the Jeweler Work for You

The Jeweler is where duplicate runes can become part of your crafting strategy. Three runes with the exact same name can be combined into one random rune of the next rarity.

Magic runes can become Rare, and Rare runes can become Legendary. Once you reach Legendary quality, three Legendary Runes can be rerolled into a completely different random Legendary Rune.

This system is useful when your inventory is crowded, but it should not encourage careless spending. Always check your crafting plans before converting valuable duplicates.

Protect Your Mythic Crafting Materials

Mythic crafting requires more than luck. Specific recipes require six copies of a designated Legendary Rune along with Resplendent Sparks.

Harlequin Crest requires EOM, Tyrael's Might requires LITH, Ring of Starless Skies requires BAC, and Shroud of False Death requires MON. If one of these is your target, treat the relevant rune as a protected resource.

Duplicate Mythics can also help because unwanted copies can be salvaged for Resplendent Sparks. That means an item you do not need can still contribute directly toward the Mythic you are trying to craft.

Trading Can Complete the Missing Pieces

Because runes are tradeable, you do not always have to rely on random drops. If your inventory contains a valuable Legendary Rune that has no purpose for your current build, trading it for a missing rune can be a much more efficient solution.

This is especially useful when you are one or two copies short of a Mythic recipe. Instead of repeating the same farming activity indefinitely, check whether your excess resources can help you obtain what is missing. If you are also interested in Diablo 4 materials, remember that efficient farming is about converting your time into the resources that actually advance your character rather than simply collecting the largest possible pile.

Final Thoughts on Rune Efficiency

The best rune farming strategy is a rotation rather than a single activity. Use Kurast Undercity with the right Tribute when you want targeted drops, switch to Tree of Whispers when you need additional runes and Tributes, and use Helltides when mixed rewards make more sense.

Most importantly, keep your Mythic goal visible while managing your stash. Save the Legendary Runes you need, upgrade lower-quality duplicates when appropriate, reroll only after checking your requirements, and trade valuable excesses when it helps complete your target. That approach makes rune farming much more predictable and gives every endgame session a clearer purpose.
